Pupils at the Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Sports College are celebrating a fantastic year of GCSE results. Staff at the school said the results have shown an "extremely significant improvement" following recent outstanding success of the school's A-level results last week.

Staff at the school expressed delight about the outcome of English results after raising standards in the subject was an action point from the Ofsted inspection in October last year.

Religious Education results showed 87 per cent of students achieving grades A* - C, with 34 per cent accomplishing A* or A.

There were some excellent outcomes for a number of individual students which reflect some of the overall strength of the results this year. These include:

  • Caitlin Cafferkey – 6A* and English language grade 9, English literature grade 8, maths grade 9
  • Paulina Florian – 5 A*/1A English language grade 8, English Literature grade 9, maths grade 7
  • Stephanie Cunningham – 1A*/5A and English language grade 8, English literature grade 9, maths grade 7
  • Olivia Jimenez – 5 A/ 1 B and English language grade 9, English literature grade 6, maths grade 7
  • Szymon Oramus - 2A*/3A/1B and English language grade 7, English literature grade 6, maths grade 9
  • Samuel Thorpe – 4A/1 BTEC Distinction and English language grade 9, English literature grade 8, maths grade 8

Head teacher, Martin Cain, said: "Despite the absence of any national comparative data for the new English and Maths GCSE it is very obvious to us that the English results have shown a huge improvement and this is particularly pleasing as this was an area highlighted for improvement in the Ofsted inspection last October.

"After last week's really positive sixth form results we think it has been a very good week for the school and this is plainly and simply down to the incredibly hard work put in by our staff and students and amazing levels of support that we receive from our parents. I would like to express my gratitude and offer my congratulations to all concerned.

"I must once again pay tribute to and offer my huge thanks to the staff at the school who have strained every possible sinew to the absolute limit to help our equally very hard working students to get over the examination line.

"I really do hope that any Year 11 students, whether they have already applied or not, are seriously considering taking up a place in the Sixth Form as we would be delighted if this was to be the case, provided that they have met the relevant entry requirements."
