An overturned car is causing chaos for drivers on the M1 northbound near Derby this morning.

According to traffic information company Inrix, the incident happened between Junction 24 for the A50 and Junction 25 for the A52.

There is currently queuing traffic for about five miles and two out of three lanes are blocked.

The incident has caused particularly bad traffic problems as it has happened in an area of roadworks.

Traffic information company Inrix says there are still delays of around 25 minutes on the northbound carriageway between Junction 23A for the A42 and Junction 25 for Brian Clough Way.

An Inrix spokesman said: “Traffic remains slow here through the on-going roadworks.”

The Highways England prediction that traffic would return to normal by 2.45pm was optimistic.

The Traffic England site shows that there are still stationary vehicles in the area.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix is reporting additional travel times of 25 minutes - this may also prove optimistic and travellers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Time to take these Highways England predictions with a pinch of salt we think.

It is now saying it will be 2.45pm before traffic returns to normal and that there are 15 minute delays through the affected area.

Its live traffic map would suggest it’ll be after 3pm as there’s still a couple of miles of stationary traffic.

The organisation had previously predicted 2pm.

Travel time through the affected area is 55 minutes - despite all lanes being re-opened

Travel information site Inrix said: “Queuing traffic due to earlier overturned car on M1 Northbound between J24 A6 / A50 / A453 (Kegworth / East Midlands Airport) and J25 A52 Brian Clough Way (Nottingham / Derby).

“In the roadworks area. Travel time is 55 minutes. All lanes have been re-opened.

“Lane one (of three) was closed for recovery of the overturned car. A lorry and a car broke down within the queues. The road was blocked until around 10am. There was also a vehicle fire within queues at J23a.”

East Midlands Ambulance Service release statement about overturned car

A spokesperson from East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 7.09am on December 21 from our colleagues at Derbyshire police requesting medical assistance at a road traffic collision on M1 Northbound between Junction 24 and 25.

“We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, two crewed ambulances and the air ambulance. One patient was treated at the scene and one patient was taken to Queens Medical Centre by land ambulance.”

Drivers have reported being stuck in traffic for over three hours since 7.30am this morning.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue release statement about car fire

A spokesperson from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 9.33am to reports of a car on fire.

“One appliance from Castle Donington, one from Loughborough and one from Derbyshire were sent to the scene.

“Crews arrived to the scene to find a car well alight. One hose reel is currently being used along with two members with breathing apparatus.”
