More than 1,800 pubs have been snapped up by Dutch brewing giant Heineken from Burton-based Punch Taverns.

It comes after the Competition and Markets Authority, has given the go ahead for the multi-million pound deal to take place.

Back in June, the markets authority had warned Heineken that there were 33 areas where the pubs would not face enough competition if the takeover went as planned, but the brewery has now offered to sell some pubs to ease this worry and meet competition requirements.

Public opinion was also sought by the authority before a final decision was made to give the deal the green light.

The deal values the 1,895 Punch Taverns leased pubs, at £402.7 million. Punch has its headquarters in Burton, on Second Avenue, just off Wellington Road and employs around 441 people.

The markets authority has released a statement saying: "Heineken has offered to sell pubs in each of the affected areas to preserve competition and ensure customers in these locations do not lose out.

"The Competition and Markets Authority is satisfied that its concerns have been addressed and has therefore decided that the merger will not be referred for an in-depth phase two investigation."

Heineken will add the 1,895 pubs to its existing portfolio of 1,100 leased pubs across the UK.
