Eight weeks of highways work are to go ahead in Burton to improve accessibility to the town's rail station - including widening Borough Road and providing an extra bus shelter.

Works will start at the earliest on Monday, September 17 on Borough Road, which runs past the Railway Station.

The road will be widened to create bus lay-bys, an existing zebra crossing will be moved and an extra bus shelter built along with other work.

Where the road passes the station, it will be widened, with lay-bys added on both the eastbound and westbound sides of the road for buses.

A zebra crossing currently on the road will be moved roughly 65 metres, with a new bus shelter also added which displays "real time" travel updates.

It is hoped the move will make the Burton station more accessible

A dedicated right turn will be created from Borough Road into the station, with a one-way system introduced to the car park.

This will also see the current footpath and carriageway resurfaced on Borough Road around the station.

Network Rail and station operators East Midlands Trains plan to undergo work on the station forecourt at the same time as the highways work which will see the taxi rank moved.

The station and nearby businesses will continue to be open and accessible throughout the improvement programme.

Two-way traffic lights will be put in place throughout the works on Borough Road, and some delays should be expected.

Staffordshire County Council , who are overseeing the works, has offered advice to residents to enable the work to be completed as quickly and as effectively as possible.

A spokesman for Staffordshire County Council has said: "Please keep children away from the works to ensure their safety. Please drive appropriately past the works or around the diversion route.

"Check your shoes before entering your property or car to make sure there is no bitumen from the works."

Anybody with queries about the work is urged to get in touch with the contact centre at Staffordshire County Council on 0300 111 8000 or by emailing highways@staffordshire.gov.uk.
