Drivers in Staffordshire are being reminded that '20 is Plenty' when it comes to their speed as the county council rolls out a road safety campaign for driving near schools.

With most school children having already seen an end to their six weeks summer holidays, the scheme from Staffordshire County Council has been set up to remind drivers of the limits that they should be travelling at near school.

Speed indication devices, which show the speed of a vehicle as it passes a certain area have been placed outside 15 schools across the county, to make drivers aware of what they are travelling at.

On the list of 15 schools which have been selected to display the signs ahead of the new school year, one is from the Burton area; William Shrewsbury Primary School, in Stretton.

Bernadette Hunter, head teacher at the Church Road school, said: "William Shrewsbury Primary School is delighted to have been nominated for the '20 is plenty' outside our school. The safety of the children at our school is paramount and we believe that encouraging drivers to observe the 20 miles per hour limit will help to keep all our families safe on their journeys to and from school.

"Many of our 680 pupils walk to school along Church Road which is a busy road where there is always a great deal of traffic at the start and end of the school day.

"The speed indicator devices should ensure that drivers reduce their speed outside the school and make the area less dangerous for everyone who uses it."

Helen Fisher, cabinet support member for highways and transport at the county council, has said that: "This is an important scheme that helps to keep school children and our roads among the safest in the country.

"We are in the eighth year of the scheme now and so far more than 200 schools across the county have benefited from it. The campaign calls on drivers not to put pupils lives at risk by driving above 20 miles an hour when outside schools.

"The scheme is also encouraging more parents and children to walk and cycle to school which helps to reduce congestion at school times."
