A Burton teacher has been given a reason to celebrate after achieving Girlguiding's highest award. Vanessa Johnson, of Burton, was presented with her Queen's Guide Award at a ceremony held at Girlguiding Burton's campsite in Tatenhill.

Members from across Staffordshire went along to celebrate her achievements with a camp fire and food.

Vanessa took three years to complete the award which included a collection of challenges which had to be completed before she turned 26.

The Burton primary school teacher selected personal challenges in fields including volunteering, social action, developing new skills and travelling to a new place.

These included photography, an exploration to Wales, research into women's football and gaining her Girlguiding going away licence with the Brownies and to camp with Guides, and finally being a member of the press team at a County International Camp.

The Queen's Guide Award is the highest award achievable in Girlguiding. It revolves around the Guide setting up their own challenges at their own pace, and is designed to help young women gain skills for life and work.

Vanessa said: "The Queen's Guide award has brought me many experiences. The fact that I have opened a new Guide unit through the award, with 21 girls as members, is what I am proud of the most. I want to be able to give as many girls as possible the chance to achieve this award too."

The Burton Division of the Girlguides is holding a Guide Taster Night at Brook House, in Shobnall Road, on Monday, September 18, at 7.15pm to allow girls to see for themselves all that Girlguiding can offer.
