Burton Tennis Club is in with the chance of winning £200,000 after being awarded funding from a house building company’s charity scheme.

Persimmon Homes North Midlands handed the club a generous £750 after the team applied for funding from their Healthy Communities programme, a scheme which is aimed at amateur sports teams and individuals aged 21 years and under.

The house builder will hand out £750 to either an individual or sports team in the area with the money to be spent on sports kit, equipment, coaching or facilities as part of the scheme.

In January next year, Permisson's 30 businesses over England, Scotland and Wales will choose a team or individual to represent them in the grand finale.

The finale will see an online public vote decide the overall winner and the most deserving champion, whether it be an individual or a group, will scoop the £200,000 top prize to create a lasting legacy for themselves or their team.

Two runners-up will win £50,000 each, and the other 27 finalists will win £5,000 each.

Alison Smith, head performance tennis coach at Burton Tennis Club, said: "To encourage more people to play tennis and to raise the standards of a skills club require new equipment and we're no different.

"We are very grateful for that £750 donation from Permisson Homes and it will go towards rackets and balls but also clothing for members.

"It's fantastic we have a chance of winning the £200,000 top prize. That would be amazing, not only for us but the whole time and it's great to be involved."

Nadine O'Dowd, sales director at Persimmon Homes North Midlands, said: "We're delighted to present Burton Tennis Club with this donation as they do fantastic work in the community.

"They have demonstrated their goal to get more people in Burton involved in the game by modernising their facilities and this is something that must be commended.

"We hope our donation goes someway to helping them achieve that and who knows they could be our overall winner which would be massive for the town."
