Commuters travelling into Burton this morning will be greeted with a "no right turn" sign when heading onto a major route in the town.

For those leaving Worthington Way, near Burton Place Shopping Centre and attempting to turn right into Station Street, which leads to the town's Sainsbury's Superstore and Burton railway station, a sign is in place saying 'No right turn except for local buses' onto Station Street. It was in place this morning, Thursday, July 5.

With ongoing repair works on the Burton Bridge leading it to partially close for up to 10 weeks, traffic has been busier than normal in the town centre and the sign is likely to come as a surprise many today.

One motorist said this morning: "I don't remember that being there yesterday. I don't know what that's all about.

"What difference does it make if we turn right on to Station Street? Perhaps it's more roadworks, but it doesn't appear so and I hope not.

"I suspect people will just head through Cooper's Square car park and that's no good at all really. I hope it's a mistake and the sign is in the wrong place."

It remains unclear why this sign is where it is and Staffordshire County Council have been approached for comment and for guidance on how long it will be in place. We will bring you an update when we have one.
