A controlled explosion has taken place on Station Street during the bomb scare in Burton town centre

Crowds have gathered and a large bang could be heard across the town centre as far away as Horninglow Street and Worthington Way.

The explosion took place after a suspicious package was found inside McDonald's restaurant on Station Street in Burton, this morning.

Police officers, along with colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, responded to a report shortly after 11.40am this morning, Wednesday, May 3, of a suspicious package inside the restaurant.

No-one was injured in the incident, police have said.

The immediate area was cleared and people were urged to avoid Station Street and surrounding areas.

A cordon remains in place around Station Street and part of the High Street.

The explosive ordnance disposal team is on the scene carrying out initial investigations.
