Coopers Square shopping centre in Burton was evacuated this morning, staff at the centre have confirmed.

The closure was caused by a fault in the fire alarm at Santander.

Shoppers returning to the centre

Shoppers are now returning to Coopers Square after it was discovered the evacuation was caused by a faulty fire alarm.

There is no risk to shoppers, staff at the centre have said.

Evacuation caused by faulty fire alarm

David Chadfield, manager of the centre said the evacuation was due to a fault on the Santander bank fire alarm.

He added shoppers are now allowed back in and the incident is being investigated.

Confusion among shoppers

Sylvie Elliot, 70, was out shopping with friends at the time of the evacuation.

They just said there was an incident in the building.

They asked everyone to come out.

It was announced over the tannoy then the security guard came over and told everyone to come out.

They said there would be further information but then there wasn’t anyway.
