The sound of elated fans chanting 'Football's Coming Home' could be heard across Burton as England beat Sweden to make it through to the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Football fans across the country are celebrating this afternoon, and Burton is no exception, after headers by Harry Maguire and Dele Alli gave England a deserved 2-0 victory over Sweden.

And heroic saves from former Burton Albion goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made sure the Three Lions made history.

This means that England are just two wins away from winning the World Cup for the first time since 1966 and the cheers, dancing and general celebrations look to last into the night in Burton.

She said: "It's amazing, we haven't been in the semi-finals for 28 years. Our under-sevens team is playing at St George's Park tomorrow but we wanted to bring them up today so they could enjoy the match and watch England.

It was a busy day for the Locomotive team in Burton

Jordan Pickford, who has previously played for Burton Albion, made excellent saves to deny Marcus Berg, twice, and Viktor Claesson after the break, but England generally looked the more dangerous side and were rewarded when Alli headed the second from a Jesse Lingard cross in the 59th minute.

England previously reached the semi-finals in 1966, when they went on to win the World Cup for the only time, and 1990 when they lost to Germany.

The Three Lions will find out their semi-final opponents later tonight, when Croatia take on hosts Russia in the last quarter-final.

Fans back home will then once more be nervously by the TV sets on Wednesday, July 11, for the semi-final, which will kick-off at 7pm.

The England team will travel back to Moscow for the semi-final game, the city they beat Colombia in, but this time they will be at the Luzhniki Stadium.

They have not played at the ground yet. Neither have Croatia, but Russia beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening game there.
