A 60-year-old man could face a retrial over alleged sexual offences at a school near Burton more than 30 years ago after a jury failed to reach a verdict.

Michael Joseph Pedley denies rape and the indecent assault of a girl when she was a young teenager and another charge of indecent assault on a female over the age of 16.

Pedley also denied a further allegation of indecent assault on a third female under the age of 16 and a serious sexual offence, and three allegations of indecent assault against two boys under the age of 16. Neither the alleged victims nor witnesses can be identified for legal reasons.

A jury spent more than two weeks deliberating at his trial but could not reach a verdict and they were discharged by a judge sitting at Stafford Crown Court.

Pedley is now due back at Stafford Crown Court on July 18 for a directions hearing at which the prosecution will decide whether the former teacher will face a retrial.
