Parents, teachers and pupils at Granville Sports College have celebrated outstanding GCSE success as much-anticipated results arrived this morning on Thursday, August 24.

The results proved a huge success as 68 per cent of the youngsters managed to achieve a grade four or above in English and maths, which equates to a grade C in the old grading system.

Seventy four per cent of pupils achieved a level four or above in maths, with four achieving a grade nine.

Ten students also passed further maths, an impressive accomplishment for the school, in Burton Road, Woodville.

Ben Turner, of Blackfordby, achieved some of the highest grades in the school – bagging an A** in English Literature and hopes to someday go on to Oxford University to read Law.

The 16-year-old said: "I'm less sad about leaving school now I have the results and they went the way I wanted them to go. I think I'm going to miss quite a few people here, but it's on to the next step."

Matty Warner achieved A grade equivalent in all subjects, including an A* Distinction in further maths and will go on to study at Ashby School's sixth form.

He said: "I'm really, really happy. Especially in maths because that's my favourite subject. There was a lot of build up before you get your results but I'm so happy to finally have them."

Some pupils found school more difficult than others. When Jake Towle's mother died when he was 11, he said it was the moral support of his teachers who helped him through such a devastating time.

The pupil from Swadlincote said: "It was hard, but you kind of get used to it, but it doesn't get any easier," he said.

Jake will be going to study networking at college following his excellent GCSE results. He said: "My teacher Mrs Hewitt believed in me, and that helped."

Kathryn Law, of Woodville, said she was "so relieved" after opening the results she had anticipated for months. She will go on to college to study games development, something she established an interest in over the last two years.

She said: "I've always loved telling stories, so this is just a new way of story-telling for me. I'm just so happy, I feel so relieved."

Jo Kingswood, head teacher at Granville Sports College, said: "We are absolutely thrilled with our results and it reflects the hard work and determination of our staff and students.

"Although comparison with previous years is very difficult due to changes in the GCSE grading structure, we have achieved our best results for a number of years.

"Many of our students have done exceptionally well and they should all be so proud of their efforts."

The results come after GCSE grade changes were brought in by the Conservative government which show a new numbered grade system with an extra grade at the top for the highest achievers.
