Two big-hearted volunteers are sporting some very different hairdos as one shaved off her long locks and the other went multi-coloured.

Julie Hammond is turning heads with her rainbow coloured hair and Trina Gee shaved her head, donating her locks to the Little Princess Trust so it can be turned in to wigs for children who have lost their hair through illnesses such as cancer.

Mrs Gee, 35, battled cervical cancer two years ago and wanted to do this so she was losing her hair on her own terms.

The brave women, who are both members of the Burton Hospitals League of Friends, overcome their fears when they headed to Lucy's Hair Extensions and Beauty, in Horninglow Street, in a bid to raise money for the organisation and the hospital's oncology department.

Mrs Hammond, 53, who was born with foetal alcohol syndrome, said: "On the day of the hairdo heroes both Trina and myself were nervous wrecks, we realised that there was no going back.

"Although I think there was a point when we were at the salon we both nearly bottled it. I had to get there at 4pm as obviously my hair had to be completely bleached and all colour removed.

"This was the point that I thought I was going to back out to be honest as you hear so many stories of bleaching going wrong.

"All nerves aside the colour was removed and I said to Lucy and Abby (of Lucy's Hair Extensions and Beauty) to feel free to do what you think is best. My hair dye was put on and would be removed when the guests were present."

The women originally set a target of £500 but they smashed that by raising at least £700 with money still coming in.

Those who want to show their support for the Burton Hospitals League of Friends are invited to join a fund-raising evening at Apne Indian Cuisine, in Cross Street, Burton, on Monday, September 11.

The evening will included a four-course meal and entertainment as well as a raffle and auction.

The event costs £20 per person and those interested are urged to book now to avoid disappointment. Bookings and further information is available from Mrs Hammond by emailing Julie.hammond@aol.com or calling her on 07517 126935 or 566333 extension 5321.
