Eight jobs have been created as popular nationwide chain HMV returns to Burton after a five-year absence with a warm welcome from music-lovers.

The speciality chain, famed as the place to go for music memorabilia, CDs and DVDs, will throw open its doors on Thursday, July 26 in Burton's Octagon shopping centre, in New Street.

It will open in the former unit of fellow music chain, That's Entertainment, which closed at the end of May.

The move has seen eight new jobs brought to the town, with three people transferred from other stores and five roles created and already filled.

HMV will return to Burton five years after its store in Coopers Square shopping centre closed in 2013 as the chain shut 66 outlets across the country.

Burton's former HMV store hit the headlines when it was opened in 2004 by pop singer Peter Andre, but a less high-profile launch is being organised this time around.

The closest HMV stores to Burton are currently located in Derby, Nottingham and Nuneaton.

A spokesman from HMV said: "We were offered a very acceptable deal to move into the Octagon Centre, which we were delighted to agree to, as it allows us to bring the best entertainment offer to the shoppers of Burton."

As well as CDs and DVDs, the new HMV store will sell vinyl records, turntables, headphones, speakers, t-shirts and much more.

The manager of The Octagon shopping centre, Peter Hardingham said he was "more than excited" to see another top national brand open in the centre.

Mr Hardingham said: "We're excited about it. It's good to see a new retailer opening especially with all the closures we've seen in the town recently. It's good to see a major brand opening in our centre.

"We're hoping that the hype will come from social media. The unit has certainly been transformed."

To mark the opening, a competition will be held on the shopping centre's website throughout the day on Thursday, July 26, giving away prizes from the store including turntables, CDs and DVDs.

Shoppers have been reacting with excitement ahead of the opening, with one, Susan, saying: "I'm quite pleased to see HMV, it's a good idea. Hopefully, as long as the prices are competitive enough then they'll be ready to go."

Erin Mcloughlin from Burton, said: "Yeah, of course it's good to see a big brand coming. I might shop there, especially at Christmas time."

Another shopper, Linsey Foster added: "I think it's a good idea, I'll shop there. I used to shop there when it was in Coopers Square."

The Burton Mail revealed last week that the store would be coming back to town, with online comments hailing the news as "brilliant."

'BrianStocks' added: "Absolutely brilliant news let us hope people support this enterprise this time instead of rushing to their keyboards and buying or downloading everything online."

On Facebook, Burton Mail reader Nick Jarvis said: "Don't have to go to Derby now to get stuff!"

Peter Corr said: "If they still get all the imported music albums and stuff, might be worth checking out."

Matthew Harbon said: "Finally," with Rebecca Andrews adding "Great news!"
