There was delight for music fans today after it was announced that store chain HMV is set to open a shop in Burton's Octagon Centre.

The chain, which specialises in music memorabilia, CDs and DVDs, will open its doors to customers on Thursday, July 26.

The move marks a return to the town for HMV. Its shop in Coopers Square was closed in 2013 as the chain shut 66 stores nationally.

The new store, which will open in the unit left vacant when music chain That's Entertainment closed at the end of May.

As well as CDs and DVDs, the HMV new store will sell vinyl records, turntables, headphones, speakers and t-shirts. It is unknown at this stage if new jobs are being created by the move.

The closest HMV stores to Burton are currently in Derby, Nottingham and Nuneaton.

Reacting to the news that the specialised music store is set to open, Chris Baldwin, front man of Burton's most successful rock band of the moment, Star from Ivy said he has had to adapt to the digital music revolution of the last few years.

But the talented singer still thinks the buzz of buying a physical record is "not possible to replicate" digitally.

He said: "I've been worried about the perceived value of recorded music with the decline of entertainment retail.

"The reinstatement of a central physical store to purchase film and music from in Burton-on-Trent can only be a good thing for the consumer habits of the local population."

Star from Ivy's most recent release, Circularity, has received rave reviews, leading to a host of high-profile gigs and festival slots around the UK.

Chris said: "Like most people, I'm a huge fan of digital; our Circularity project is something that is powered by digital and social media. But there’s just something about owning a physical copy of something as a collectible piece of art.

"I don't believe that it’s possible to replicate the value of that feeling digitally.

"It's our dream, as Star From Ivy, to have Circularity exist as a double gate-fold vinyl, so it’s heartening to see that there’ll be an opportunity for people to invest in music as art, as well as consuming digitally for enjoyment."
