Two Burton Queen's Hospital workers have been chosen out of hundreds to represent the Midlands and East region at the NHS Birthday Awards.

Consultant urological surgeon Jyoti Shah and advanced nurse practitioner Sarah Minns from the Belvedere Road hospital have been nominated for launching their 'Inspire Health: Fighting Prostate Cancer' campaign.

Since its launch in 2016, the campaign has screened more than 840 men at community venues, including at Burton Albion Football Club, an African-Caribbean community centre and many Freemasons' Lodges.

The aim was to take the screening sessions to where men where after it was shown that they were got good at coming forward and seek help.

Jyoti, consultant urological surgeon at Queen's Hospital said: "Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in this country.

"We have seen a big demand for these screenings and we are grateful to be considered for this award."

As regional champions in the 'Excellence in Cancer Care' category at the NHS 70 Parliamentary Awards, Jyoti and Sarah will now vie with other regional winners from across England for a national award to be presented at a special ceremony in the Palace of Westminster in July.

They were nominated for their award by Burton MP Andrew Griffiths.

Ken Deacon, medical director for NHS England in the North Midlands, said: "The Excellence in Cancer Care category of the awards is designed to recognise individuals or teams going above and beyond to improve treatment and outcomes for patients.

"Jyoti and Sarah have certainly done that by setting up the 'Inspire Health: Fighting Prostate Cancer' campaign.

"Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK and the campaign’s pop-up community clinics have succeeded in reaching many people who may not otherwise have sought support."

All of the champions will now be invited to the national awards ceremony, which will be held on July 4, the day before the NHS' 70th birthday.

The ceremony will be hosted by Dr Sara Kayat, NHS GP and TV doctor best known for This Morning, Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls and GPs: Behind Closed Doors.

The regional champions will now go forward to a final stage of judging by a panel including the leaders of Royal Colleges, the Unison trade union, and the Patients Association – collectively representing millions of health and care workers and patients.
