The devastated owners of a curious kitten who had part of her ear sliced off by "depraved scum" have warned others to be on their guard.

Paul and Yasmin Edwards, of Heathlands Grange, Stapenhill, are speaking out after little Mollie returned home from her great escape with half her ear slashed off. At first the couple thought she had been attacked by another animal but a trip to the vet told a very different story.

The four-month-old is only normally allowed out of the house when her owners are home as she is still young but on Monday, July 31 they returned home to find the bedroom window was open and Mollie had gone.

Paul and Yasmin Edwards returned home the other day to find their 4 month old kitten Mollie, had had part of her ear missing. They took her to the emergency vets and thought she had been attacked by another animal but were horrified to discover that the ear had been cut off.

After calling her, Mollie came straight back but with blood over one of her ears.

Mr Edwards, who has three cats, including Mollie, and a puppy, said: "We normally let her out when we are here so she can get some experience outside but when we got home on Monday we saw the window had been pushed open by one of the other cats.

"We called her and she came straight round but her ear was covered in blood and it was half missing. We took her to the vet as we thought another animal had attacked her while she was out on the estate.

"Once the vet had cleared it up you could see that it had been cut straight and had been done by a person. Mollie does not seem psychologically damaged by it and is still quite happy.

"She was back to normal when we got back, just hungry and, luckily, not affected. We just made sure she was happy. Mollie is very loving and will go up to anyone so it wouldn’t be difficult for someone to do it. She would not run away from anyone.

"Mollie was quiet when she got back from the vets but once the anaesthetic had worn off, she was happy with the puppy and the cats.

"When she got back the other friendly cat was sitting with her and even the grumpy one has been around her, wanting to know what is going on."

The couple want to make others aware of what has happened to Mollie to try to prevent it from happened to anyone else’s pet.

Mr Edwards, 27, said: "We are really upset about it; she is part of the family and for someone to do this has upset us. It is unfair that she has had to go through this.

"We have had Mollie since she was old enough to come home as we got her from friends.

"We just hope to stop this happening to another animal. You just can’t image why anyone would want to do that. We don’t ever expect the person who did this to get caught or come forward but we want other people who are looking after animals to keep an eye out as there could be more.

"They are depraved scum and this is unfair. We want to warn other people as we know they are not going to find them and there will be no justice for Mollie but at least other animals will be kept safe.

"Mollie is recovering well and is still happy. We were expecting her to be quite timid when she got back but she is still brave and playful."
