There is severe traffic on the M1 after an air ambulance was called out to an overturned car.

The motorway had been closed entirely up until just before 4.45pm.

Now one lane is open northbound and the southbound carriageway has been reopened.

The accident was northbound between Junction 24 for East Midlands Airport and Junction 25 for the A52.

Traffic information company Inrix says there are 35 delays on top of normal journey times.

No word yet on the condition of anyone involved in the accident.

Traffic information company Inrix says just one lane now remains closed on the M1 northbound.

It says there is “stop-start” traffic.

Slip road onto M1 closed but one lane open northbound

The slip road onto the M1 at Junction 24A is closed.

That appears to be where the accident was and there’s no sign of it reopening any time soon.

Meanwhile, one lane is reopen on the M1 northbound.

Also long delays on the M1 southbound near Derby

A combination of a broken down vehicle and people slowing down past the accident scene is also making traffic very slow on the southbound M1.

Traffic is backed up southbound from East Midlands Airport to the M1 near Ilkeston.

Traffic is expected to be bad until as late as 6pm

Highways England says it doesn’t expect traffic to return to normal until as late as 6pm.

They said: “There has been an accident involving an overturned vehicle.

“The event is expected to clear between 5.45pm and 6pm.”
