A 31-year-old man found in possession of a hundred wraps of Class A drugs when his car was stopped by police in Burton has been jailed.

Officers saw that Kyle Pryce had several wraps of both heroin and cocaine on the car seat between his legs.

He later volunteered that he was in possession of more drugs which officers recovered during a subsequent strip search.

Pryce, who appeared at Stafford Crown Court via video link from prison, was said to have been on licence from a previous sentence.

The court heard he was arrested in Burton in July having been released in April this year on licence from a seven-and-a half-year sentence for wounding.

In court Pryce was jailed for four years for the drug trafficking offences having admitted possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply.

Judge Michael Challinor warned Pryce that the sentence would involve fresh licence conditions and he also faced a possible recall on the previous sentence.

The court heard Pryce had five previous convictions involving drugs as well as the wounding offence.

David Poujor, prosecuting, said that Pryce's grey Toyota was stopped by police in Horninglow Street on July 23 this year.

He said that Pryce was found to be in possession of a total of 99 wraps - 54 of heroin and 45 of cocaine.
The street value of the drugs was estimated at £1,400 and officers also recovered £156 in cash from the defendant.

Richard Bannister, for Pryce, said his client had been released on licence in April and was complying with supervision but his past "caught up with him".

He said Pryce had dabbled with Class A drugs and had a debt which was not paid because he was in custody.

"He was left with a straight choice of paying the debt or facing the consequences. There were threats of violence and he took the easy way out," he said.

Mr Bannister said Pryce was taking the drugs to the Burton area where he knew they would be sold by others but was not dealing directly to drug users.

Two men and a woman from the Birmingham area who were arrested during the same police operation in Burton also appeared in court via video links from prison.

Ian Welcome admitted two charges of possession of heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply, but denied charges of being in possession of cannabis with intent to supply and possession of an imitation firearm, a gas-powered handgun.

Lynette Johnson and Dwayne Harmitt pleaded not guilty to possession of heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and the imitation firearm allegation.

All three were arrested after police stopped a Vauxhall Vectra in Parker Avenue on July 23 this year. Welcome also admitted offences relating to the car of driving without insurance, no MoT certificate and no licence.

Judge Challinor adjourned the case until January 15 next year for trial and Welcome, 49, of Cook Street, Birmingham, Johnson, 31, of Preston Road, Hockley, Birmingham, and Dwayne Harmitt, 24, of no fixed address, remain in custody.
