Residents have vowed to fight plans to turn swathes of farmland near Burton into a giant housing estate.

The Friends of Outwoods action group has objected to proposals by housing giant Gladman Developments Ltd to build up to 600 homes on 99 acres of land in Beamhill Road.

They say they have had enough of what they claim is the destruction of the countyside - and also fear further traffic problems.

The outline application recently submitted to East Staffordshire Borough Council includes plans to bulldoze agricultural buildings and a farmhouse to make way for the housing development.

If given the go-ahead the scheme would also consist of public open space, including children’s play areas and sports facilities; as well as a community park and allotments.

In the design statement provided by the developers they said the overall vision for the site is to "provide a distinctive and high quality place, which enhances the qualities and character of Beamhill".

It also says the development would provide a choice of affordable housing to meet the needs of the area, and specified this would be 33 per cent of the total development.

However, Friends of Outwoods, which has already held a meeting to debate the scheme, said homes on many greenfield sites are mainly too expensive for young families looking to get on the housing ladder.

John Anderson, a member of the Friends of Outwoods said: "The residents in Outwoods feel they have had a lot of development 'dumped' on them by speculative developers trying to make a quick profit rather than trying to house our people.

"They fully recognise there is a need for affordable homes in easy reach of employment but these greenfield sites mostly consist of expensive, aspirational homes, the cost of which is out of reach for many young families trying to get onto the property ladder.

"The residents are also very concerned about the effects of extra traffic and destruction of our beautiful countryside."

While Gladman could not provide a comment when asked by the Burton Mail, its design statement said that the 2014 Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) identified that the annual need for affordable housing in East Staffordshire is 112 homes.

It added: "The council has not met this level of affordable housing completions since adoption of the Local Plan.

"Consequently, it is apparent that there is a significant and demonstrable need for additional market and affordable housing to address the affordability problem within East Staffordshire and the wider housing market area."

The borough council is due to make a decision in the next few months.
