If you are feeling a little down in the dumps after England's heartbreaking World Cup defeat, then there is a packed weekend of events in Burton and South Derbyshire designed to cheer you up.

Burton Regatta, Overseal Gala, Hatton Carnival and Willington Carnival, as well as an open day at Tatenhill's Midland Air Ambulance base will be some of the activities taking place on Saturday and Sunday that are sure to take your mind off the football.

But if you want to see England's play for third place against Belgium this takes place at 3pm on Saturday, July 14, so you'll have to arrange your day around this.

Burton Regatta kicks off from 8.30am on Saturday and again at the same time on Sunday.

There will be family entertainment alongside one of the much-anticipated local sporting events of the summer on the River Trent.

Each year the event attracts competitors from all over the country to compete for an array of silver trophies.

The Saturday sees a rowing course stretching 1,100 metres from the Leicester Line railway bridge to a point 100 metres upstream of the Ferry Bridge on the river.

Crews return the following day to compete over a 700-metre sprint course with the same finish line.

Both day's events will take place from around 8.30am until 4pm.

If you fancy something with a carnival feel to put the smile back on your face then Overseal Gala will launch its famous parade of floats starting at 1pm, in Burton Road, Overseal, on Saturday, July 14, which will head to the village's recreation ground in Woodville Road, for a day of family fun.

The main event will be held at Hatton Sports and Social Ground, in Scropton Road, with free parking offered by the old Trent Barton garage by Hatton Butchers, in Station Road.

On the rest of the field, there will be a fun-fair, inflatables, a Punch and Judy show, with balloon modelling, a craft tent, train rides, a fun dog show and refreshments tent as well as a gin/prosecco bar, a circus workshop and many different stalls.

Willington Carnival will also be held on Saturday, July 14, from noon to 5pm.

The procession starts from the village hall, in Twyford Road, at 11.30am and arrives at Twyford Road Playing Field, Twyford Road, Willington, at noon.

The event is free for all the family, with lots of games and competitions, including the mini-Olympics event, tug of war, circus skills and the popular chicken run.

There will be activities to suit all ages, including the helicopter bouncy castle, helicopter simulator rides, trade stalls, refreshments, and raffle. Representatives from other emergency services including fire, ambulance, police and blood bikes will also be attending.
