A car involved in a police chase through Burton was found burnt out after the pursuit was called off amid concerns for the safety of officers and the public.

The vehicle, a Nissan Almera, was clocked doing speeds of up to 75mph in a 30mph zone through the town, before the chase was ended.

Police acted as the car failed to stop when requested by officers because it had no insurance.

The vehicle, said to have been stolen, then sped off along Derby Road towards the Pirelli Stadium just after 5.20pm on Monday, August 21.

The chase lasted two minutes before officers decided it was too dangerous to continue.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "A short pursuit followed, lasting two minutes, and at one point the Almera was driven at 75mph in a 30mph area.

"The pursuit was aborted because the safety of police officers, the occupants of the car and the general public was compromised."

Officers later revealed the car had been found burnt out 10 miles away in Butterpot Lane, Trusley, Ashbourne.
