A road in Burton was cordoned off by police after a manhole cover collapsed.

Derby Road was closed for around half an hour on the evening of Tuesday, July 25 due to the collapse in the road surface.

The road between the B5018 Hawkins Lane, Princess Way and Wetmore Road Junction and the A511 Horninglow Road was shut by Staffordshire Police as work was done to repair the damage left by the collapse.

Traffic information website Inrix confirmed then confirmed that Derby Road had reopened.

One eyewitness, Karl Jefferies, was close to where the manhole cover collapsed outside the Onestop shop. He took a picture as the police started to close the road and directed pedestrians away from the area.

His picture shows how far the road had sunk, as a large hole appeared underneath.
