Roadwork signs on Burton Bridge have been moved following intervention from the Burton Mail after readers complained they covered the vital footpath and cycle lane.

The signs were put up earlier this month to warn motorists about the upcoming partial closure of the bridge while repair work is carried out on Monday, June 18.

One lane will remain open to allow traffic to travel into Burton but cyclists and pedestrians will still have access to encourage people to continue to visit and support the town.

However, the warning sign on Burton Bridge found its way to covering all of the footpath and some of the cycle lane earlier this week. It has now been moved to leave the cycle lane clear - but the footpath is still blocked.

John Foster of Brizlincote Valley told the Burton Mail he was concerned about how dangerous the signs could be for pedestrians as they attempt to cross the busy bridge.

He said: "It's downright dangerous. There has been no thought put into it at all. The sign is forcing pedestrians into the cycle lane, and if cyclists are bombing down there, as some do, it could be really dangerous.

"I walk across the bridge almost every day I've seen a lot of people having to step into the road to get past.

"It seems to me that very little thought has been put into this, most likely by people who don't even live in Burton."

George Wood, who lives in Henhurst Hill, walks over the bridge every day to get in and out of town and said the signs should not have been put where they are.

He said: "I managed to fit through it but I'm not sure if people with wheelchairs or buggies will be able to get past. They might have to go into the road to get past it, which will obviously cause a problem.

"I don't think it should be there at all. It should be at the beginning of the bridge as it is wider there anyway.

"The only suggestion I would have would be to have something much higher so people could at least walk underneath it."

The council, however, says the sign has been moved from where it had originally been put and that was why it was causing problems.

A spokesman for Staffordshire County Council said: "Our traffic management team have looked at the photo and say it appears to have been moved by a third party.

"They are going down to the site to reposition correctly, which should give more room on the footway."
