Hundreds of budding detectives are being invited to find out "whodunnit" as a new interactive murder mystery centred on London's most notorious gangsters comes to Burton town centre.

Wannabe Sherlocks and Miss Marples will be able to join their families and friends to solve a series of clues and complete challenges with the help of virtual witnesses across the town centre in a bid to find out who murdered the infamous Kray twins.

Brothers Ronnie and Reggie Kray were the foremost perpetrators of organised crime in the East End of London during the 1950s and 1960s before justice eventually caught up with them.

Dubbed a mix between mobile phone virtual reality game Pokemon Go and classic murder mystery board game Cluedo, virtual murder mystery company CluedUpp is inviting people of all ages to help Chief Superintendent Leonard 'Nipper' Read solve the murder of the UK's best known gangsters.

There will be prizes for fancy dress as Burton shoppers solve the clues across the town centre

Gamers will download a mobile phone app when they pay to play and solve clues as they pop up on screen while being led on a tour around the town centre.

Tref Griffiths, founder of CluedUpp which launched last year, is expecting between 300 and 500 people will turn up to play.

He said: "We are a virtual murder mystery company and we hold one or two of these events across the UK every weekend. We had about 20,000 people take part last year and normally see between 500 to 2,000 people take part in events. In Burton we expect to see between 300 and 500.

"Basically it is the legend of The Krays and is set in 1967 but we have a unique twist in that they have been found murdered, and Detective Nipper Read needs help to solve the clues.

"Those who take part will be sent to a secret location to start and then will be sent a series of challenges when arriving at their next location in bid to unlock clues.

"There are no actors. They are all virtual witnesses who will pop up on your phone, via the app."

The event has been set up to bring families together

CluedUp was set up in a bid to bring back family games night.

Mr Griffiths said: "Being a father I know that children can spend a lot of time sitting at a computer screen or on their phones and so we set this up to bring families together.

"This is for all ages, there is nothing scary or gory. Young children won’t be able to solve the mystery themselves but they love the interactive map."

The 36-year-old was born in Watford, before moving to Swadlincote aged 19. He relocated down south again aged 25.

The murder mystery event will start between 10am and 1pm and run until 5pm on Bank Holiday Monday, May 7, in the town centre.

Gamers will be able to play the game on their mobile phones

The event will take from between two and three hours depending on clue-solving skills.

Tickets cost £5 per person. They can be reserved by visiting the website at http://events.cluedupp.com/burtonontrent/ and they will be released for sale on April 1.

Teams can consist from a minimum of two players to a maximum of six. Children do not count within team numbers and can play for free. Dogs are also welcome to help sniff out the culprit.
