A 78-year-old Burton driver who collided with a pedestrian as he crossed the road has been found guilty of careless driving.

Colin Dent, of Marlborough Crescent, Stapenhill, then later left the scene of the accident, Cannock Magistrates' Court heard.

The pensioner appeared at the court to stand trial, having previously denied driving without due care and attention.

However, he was found guilty of the offence which happened at 3.30pm, in Woods Lane, Stapenhill, on August 11, last year.

Dent had been driving a Nissan Qashqai along Woods Lane towards Marlborough Crescent. He then crashed into a pedestrian who was crossing the road heading towards the Co-op.

The pedestrian was described in court as being slightly injured. Dent then left the scene after failing to exchange details with the injured man.

Dent was fined £177 and ordered to pay £500 and a £30 victim surcharge.

His licence was endorsed with seven points.
