The iconic swan statue in Stapenhill Gardens in Burton will undergo a £3,000 major facelift in June after campaigning from residents.

Ian Siddals, an executive committee member of the Burton Civic Society raised concerns about the state of the much-loved giant swan statue with East Staffordshire Borough Council in October last year, and plans to restore the landmark have now been unveiled.

The swan, which was built in the 1950s by Stapenhill gardeners Fred Bateman and Bill Roe has become an iconic landmark for residents and visitors to the town.

The emblem of the swan even makes an appearance on Stapenhill Football Club's logo.

The restoration of the swan, which is used to plant flowers, will be carried out as part of the borough council's ongoing town centre regeneration project.

The council have decided to take responsibility for the upkeep of the ornamental swan in the grounds and will be giving it a much needed refurbishment before it falls apart.

Mr Siddals is now calling on residents in the area to get involved in a swan re-opening event when the work has been completed.

He said: "We are hoping local people will come down to join in the celebrations, and some people will run stalls in the gardens.

"It is also the swan's 65th anniversary this year, as it was made in the winter of 1952 going into the summer of 1953.

"I think it is the first time the swan will have ever had a proper restoration. It has had small touch ups here and there but it will be the first time major changes have been made.

"I have had some church-goers get in touch with me about helping with the painting, as they were the ones who painted it originally in 1953 when it was unveiled. I'm going to see what we can do to make that happen."

The borough council has revealed it will be repairing damaged sections of the swan and cleaning it before rendering and painting the figure.

Councillor Colin Whittaker said: "The swan is an iconic landmark situated in the beautiful grounds of Stapenhill Gardens. Sadly over the years it has deteriorated and is in desperate need of repair.

"Consultation has been carried out with interested parties and thoughtful planning on how to lovingly restore this iconic landmark. It is wonderful news the council is investing in preserving and restoring the swan showing its commitment in enhancing the area."

Work will begin on Monday, June 4, and staff at the council have predicted the work to take around eight to 10 days to complete.
