A series of incidents involving lorries caused traffic mayhem for commuters across Burton and South Derbyshire today, Tuesday, June 19.

Emergency services attended three separate incidents involving lorries. They were a collision in Stapenhill, an oil spillage on the A38 at Burton and a fire on the A42 near Measham.

It comes as motorists are already facing delays in Burton due to the partial closure of the town's iconic Burton Bridge.

The first incident took place on the A42 southbound, reported as a lorry blaze, and one lane was closed for more than 15 hours while a clear-up operation was in progress.

Fire crews were called at 9.36pm on Monday, June 18, to reports of the fire between junction 12 at Measham/Ashby and junction 11 at Burton.

Firefighters from Ashby fire station, Coalville station, and Burton attended, along with a water carrier from Loughborough station.

The lorry was described as "well alight" and four firefighters wore breathing apparatus to tackle the fire and two jets were used.

Emergency repair works took place on Tuesday morning after 90 per cent of the vehicle was destroyed, spilling debris on to the carriageway.

Overheated brakes were to blame for the blaze, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service has said.

One lane of the A42 was still closed at noon. The road has now been resurfaced, and white lining works have started. The southbound exit slip road was closed at junction 11.

The A38 was also closed for a shorter time between Claymills and Branston after a lorry shed its load.

Police were called at 7.55am to the southbound lanes near Shobnall fields. The lorry had been leaking oil which required a clean-up and the road was reopened by 10.45am.

In the final incident of the morning, a lorry and a car were involved in a collision near St Peter's Bridge.

West Midlands Ambulance Service and Staffordshire Police were called to the junction of Stapenhill Road and St Peter's Court, close to St Peter's Island.

The ambulance service confirmed it had been called at 9.13am on Tuesday, June 19, to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car.

One ambulance was on the scene treating a patient. It is not believed the injuries are serious.

The road was partially blocked by the vehicles for a short time.
