Residents in Burton and South Derbyshire should prepare themselves for another day of icy conditions and snow.

Following many heavy downfalls yesterday, many schools closed across Staffordshire and Derbyshire and some bus routes had issues on the roads.

A yellow weather warning was put in place by the Met Office for both Friday and Saturday.

This indicates that severe weather is possible across the next few days and could impact the area and residents.

Specifically, yellow warnings mean people should plan ahead and think about their travel arrangements.

The Met Office monitors weather situations as they develop and residents are advised to keep an eye on future forecasts and be aware that the weather might change or worsen.

Midland Classic is suspending services for the night

Update from Midland Classic

Taking to Facebook, the bus company said: “The snow is now falling heavily across much of the network and roads are becoming very slippery - even the main roads. We have therefore made the difficult decision to suspend services for the night.

“Drivers have been instructed to continue their current journeys as far as required by passengers on the bus (assuming they can get there). They will then return to Burton, picking up any passengers on the way. No further journeys will run from Burton. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused, but safety comes first.

“We will make decisions about tomorrow’s services at 6am tomorrow morning and will advise on here.

“I would like to publicly thank all our drivers for their efforts in very difficult conditions, many of whom walked to work in the early hours today to provide a service.”

High winds hindering gritters

The wind is making work difficult for gritting machines in Derbyshire and Staffordshire.

The county councils say as quick as they can move snow off the roads in the counties, the high winds are blowing it back.

In Derbyshire gritters are working on clearing principal and secondary roads, said a highways spokesman. Crews have been out 24 hours and were looking forward to the winds dropping, which is predicted to be tomorrow, Saturday, March 3.

In Staffordshire, where 40 gritting machines out as well as farmers who work with the county council, it was a similar picture.

Councillor Helen Fisher said: “The winds are the biggest problem at the moment. It’s feeling like minus 10. If anyone is out driving they have to be really, really careful.”

'Preventing ill health which can be worsened by cold weather is the key'

Staffordshire County Council has been reminding residents to ensure they look after their health during the cold weather.

The county council has urged people to check on older family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are safe and well, particularly if they have any health conditions.

They are also advising following simple steps like keeping homes at 18C, staying active, and making sure you have enough medication to last.

Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for health, care and wellbeing Alan White said: “With more freezing temperatures forecast over next few days we’re encouraging people to ensure they look after themselves and family, friends and neighbours. Simple steps like keeping your house warm and ensuring you or your family have any medication they need can help.

“People who have an older relative or neighbour may want to check on them during the cold period as they may not want to leave their homes. The weather is due to warm up slightly next week, so preventing ill health which can be worsened by cold weather is the key.”
