Although temperatures will feel milder today and the worst of the weather is behind us, residents in Burton and South Derbyshire should prepare themselves for another day of icy conditions.

Following many heavy downfalls during the week, many schools closed across Staffordshire and Derbyshire and some bus routes had issues on the roads.

A yellow weather warning was put in place by the Met Office and has continued into Sunday, March 4.

Yellow warnings mean people should plan ahead and think about their travel arrangements.

The Met Office monitors weather situations as they develop and residents are advised to keep an eye on future forecasts and be aware that the weather might change or worsen.

Drifting snow caused problems for gritters last night

Drifting snow caused problems for Staffordshire County Council’s gritting crews last night as they battled extreme conditions to clear roads.

More snow fell overnight in much of the county and crews worked through the night to keep the county moving.

Helen Fisher, cabinet support member for highways and transport said:

After battling some of the worst weather we’ve seen in the county yesterday, our gritting crews were out again working tirelessly to clear the roads.

Again, it was the winds and drifting snow that caused the most problems, and driving conditions still remain hazardous this morning.

Crews have literally been digging out the drifting snow, as well as having to deal with a number of abandoned vehicles.

They’ve been concentrating on major routes overnight, and we are thanking people for their patience while crews clear the other routes as soon as they can.

We’re also continuing to ask people to look out for friends or neighbours if they are older or more vulnerable as this exceptionally cold weather carries on into the weekend.

How to drive in icy weather

Breakdown cover provider Green Flag has revealed its top tips on driving in icy weather.

  1. Check your speed and use gentle driver inputs - even if the roads have been gritted they’re likely to be slippery.
  2. Give more warning than usual to other drivers - when turning, stopping or changing lane.
  3. Keep plenty of distance between cars - you never know when you’ll hit an icy patch. If you pass the same landmarks as the car in front of you within three seconds, you’re following too closely.
  4. Check whether your car has ABS anti-lock brakes. In the unlikely event that it doesn’t, pump the brake pedal slowly to prevent the wheels locking up and skidding.
  5. Be extra-wary of black ice. It’s an invisible danger that can catch out even the most careful driver.
  6. Approach corners at a steady speed, in as low a gear as possible. Don’t touch the clutch unless it’s absolutely necessary, steer smoothly and avoid braking on bends.
  7. Make sure all passengers are wearing seat belts.
  8. Ensure you’re familiar with your car’s ventilation system to prevent windows from steaming up. Air conditioning will keep windows free from mist and condensation.
