Hundreds of people are expected to line the banks of the River Trent to gather for the annual Willington Raft Race.

The time-honoured tradition on Saturday will see dozens of teams from across South Derbyshire and further afield keep the event afloat for another year with a raft of support.

It is a celebration of the bridge between Willington and Repton which was built in 1839 and became toll free in 1898.

The race was set up 100 years after the bridge became toll free.

Over the years, teams with homemade rafts take part and it has become increasingly popular for its spectacular fancy dress, with 16 boats taking part this year.

'Rafters' don fancy dress and take to their home-made vessels

Saturday's event will be the first without Mick Coxon at the helm after he stood down last year following 21 years service.

Over the years, Willington Raft Race has seen thousands of "rafters" take to the waters of the River Trent, in Newton Solney, and paddle down to the Old Trent Bridge, in Willington.

The race is due to start at 1.45pm, at Newton Solney, behind the Unicorn pub, and finish at the Old Trent Bridge.

The majority of rafters are expected to be seen in Willington at 2pm.
