Roadworks could be suspended on a Willington route currently used as a diversion during the partial closure of Burton Bridge after concerns were raised.

The roadworks, which includes traffic lights, on Repton Road have been causing major delays for motorists using the route while major works take place on the bridge.

The bridge over the River Trent, which is a main route in and out of Burton, is closed to traffic heading out of town, however one lane is open to traffic coming in.

Councillor Conor Wileman has raised concerns about the Willington roadworks, saying he does not feel they are urgent and should not be in place while Burton Bridge is undergoing essential strengthening work.

He says the two-way traffic lights in the village are causing misery for motorists using the road as a diversion.

Work on Burton Bridge in the town

He said he believed there were to be no roadworks on diversion routes until work is completed on the iconic bridge.

The councillor, who represents the Burton Tower division on Staffordshire County Council and has been monitoring the effect of the partial closure of the bridge, feels roadworks should only be in place on diversion routes during the bridge works in an emergency, such as a gas leak or burst water main.

He has now asked Derbyshire County Council, which issued the permit for the work, to either suspend it or make sure it finishes today, Thursday, July 5.

Western Power Distribution is currently digging up the road in Willington to connect a new electricity supply to a housing development there. It is not due to end until July 9.

Roadworks in Willington are non-emergency and causing congestion during Burton Bridge partial closure

When asked if he thought the roadworks in Willington were an emergency, Councillor Wileman said: "No, absolutely not. The permit was issued by Derbyshire County Council. In my personal view it should not have been allowed on a diversion route."

A motorist, who did not want to be named, said: "My journey from Burton town centre to Repton each evening usually takes me around 20 minutes - traffic permitting.

"However, since I can no longer leave the town via Burton Bridge, I have to drive down the A38 to travel home.

"On Wednesday, July 4, traffic leaving the A38 at the Y-Pas was at a standstill on the dual carraigeway.

"I carried on until Toyota Island but couldn't take the Willington exit as traffic was at a standstill there too.

"I had to detour onto the A50 and leave at the Bonnie Prince island to travel across Swarkestone Bridge. I then had to drive through Ingleby and Milton to get to Repton.

"Why, oh why, would work involving traffic lights in Willington be allowed while Burton Bridge is being repaired? It makes absolutely no sense and caused me an even bigger headache than usual. It took me an hour to travel from Burton to Repton which is just ridiculous.

"Traffic lights in Willington have caused traffic problems in the past - even when the bridge is fully functional."

Repton resident Peter Horridge, who later contacted Councillor Wileman, said: "I’ve emailed the councillor as I don’t believe connecting up the new housing development is an emergency. The feeling is very high.

"I came through on Wednesday to get to Repton. It was very difficult so I would imagine there is a lot of frustration, especially in the hot weather."

Third week of Burton Bridge partial closure for major improvement works

Councillor Wileman said: "I am extremely concerned this permit was issued."

"I have requested either a suspension of the works or for them to end today but that doesn't mean it will happen.

"They are due to finish on July 9. I saw this a few days ago and have asked Derbyshire County Council to review the permit that was allowed on the B5008 and whether it is a necessary permit on a diversion route, to try and resolve the situation."

The Burton Mail is awaiting comment from Derbyshire County Council and Western Power Distribution.
