A major expansion of a popular Burton hotel is now taking place, bringing jobs to the area. The size of the Premier Inn, which is situated next to the Beefeater pub, in Wellington Road, will now be increased by another 23 bedrooms after its owners recognised its potential following growth in Burton.
It has not yet been indicated how many jobs will be available. Owners, Dunstable-based Whitbread, has been given permission by East Staffordshire Borough Council to expand the hotel, built in 1997.
Whitbread's agent Walsingham Planning said in its report to the council: "The use of a site, as a hotel, is clearly very well established. Since its construction, however, the hotel has not been extended or modernised, hence the application will assist in enhancing the site and the local tourist offer overall.
"Whitbread has recognised a requirement for additional rooms in the area. The existing hotel is one of the group's best performing facilities in the region, as measured by occupancy and turn-away data.
"It is therefore proposed to further extend the Premier Inn through the addition of 23 rooms to make a total of 87 bedrooms. The application proposes the construction of a new four-storey extension to the existing block on the east elevation within an area that is currently used for car parking."
