Work on a road branded the worst in Britain is set to be completed on time but it is not over as more is planned for next year.

The major £500,000 scheme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, to resurface the B5016 Station Road in Barton under Needwood, along with three roundabouts onto the A38, should be completed on schedule for Saturday morning, September 2.

The work has included some deep repair patches on the A38 overbridge surface that is maintained by the county council. However, it has now been revealed that Highways England, which maintains the bridge structure, is also planning further works to the bridge next year. They will then completely resurface the carriageway over the bridge when this has finished.

Work to repair the road at Barton under Needwood has lasted for five weeks

Workman have been hard at work over the last five weeks to resurface the road, which has previously been described as being "like the surface of the moon", as well as replacing the kerbs and ironworks as part of the project.

Helen Fisher, Staffordshire County Council's cabinet support member for highways and transport explained that the project had gone to plan and the improvement work was on schedule to be completed on time.

She said: "Our £500,000 investment at Barton Turns is part of our wider package of improvements right across the county. I'm sure motorists will notice a real difference and I would like to thank people for their patience while the work was carried out.

"The work was programmed in for the holiday period to minimise disruption and to ensure it was completed by the time most people were back at work and school."

Work is set to end at Barton Turns at the weekend

Burton Mail readers have previously made their voices heard over the state of the road before the work started with Andrew Hollyhead, from Barton, going as far as to call the B5016 island on the way back from Walton to Barton as "moon-like" and "more suited for an off-road vehicle".

Others have said that there are better roads in India and Africa than Barton. Last year the roundabout made national news and headlines with people asking whether it was one of the worst roads in the country for its potholes and general condition.
