Motorists have been reassured that work is taking place on St Peter’s Bridge is on target despite a small gap in the day when residents have reported that the structure appears silent.

Staffordshire County Council has told the Burton Mail that a "crew changeover" is the reason for when the bridge appears empty for a short period in the afternoon.

The council responded after residents took to social media to ask questions about the lack of contractors and machinery on the bridge earlier this afternoon.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Burton Mail: "I have just been on the Ferry Bridge and people have been astounded that there is not a vehicle or person in sight on St Peter’s Bridge. Even if they take breaks you would expect them to be staggering times.

Work is being carried out from 7.30am to 10.30pm Monday to Friday and until 4.30pm on Saturdays.

"There are lots of people expressing concern. The bridge is completely clear."

A spokesman for the council said: "There is a gap when there is a crew changeover. It usually takes about half an hour and the next team gets to work at around 4.30pm after having a briefing."

The essential repair works on the bridge are to replace "life-expired" bearings so that HGV's can continue to use the route.

The work has caused major traffic issues in the town, which has meant long tailbacks for motorists. Some traders have also reported a dip in sales as they say people are staying away while the work goes on.

The bridge, which carries an average of 24,000 vehicles a day, is undergoing a strengthening work to prevent a weight limit being introduced. The three-month closure is set to be completed at the end of November 2017.
