A group supporting older people and those battling dementia has been officially opened its doors in Burton.

Approach will now be holding day opportunity sessions at the Queen Street Community Centre from 10am to 3pm every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

The sessions offer everything from crafts, ball games and gentle exercises to entertainment, parties, baking and gardening.

Those who attend can also take advantage of occasional trips out and visits. Organisers also offer a My Day My Way service which is led by the person affected by dementia.

A spokesman said: “Often people with a dementia diagnosis feel they do not have the confidence to carry on with their favourite interests or hobbies, but we aim to match them with support workers who share similar interests and will actively encourage and support the person to start those activities again.

“We currently have people who are supported in wildlife walks, photography, shopping and gardening and with support available between 8am and 9pm, seven days a week; we aim to be as flexible as possible. We have in-home files which give details of the support and are a handy way for carers to find out what their loved ones have been doing during their session.”

Approach has been supporting older people affected by dementia and other related health issues for more than 36 years.
