Organisers of a garden party at Burton's George Rider House kept their fingers tightly crossed in June 1983. Before the event kicked-off, dark clouds threatened rain but the crowds still turned out in their hundreds.

The event managed to raise £645 for the residential home which was an increase of £100 on the 1982 total. The garden party at the Stapenhill Road home was organised by the League of Friends for the George Rider House and secretary Joyce Shaw said the money would be spent on a new carpet and a television.

Mrs Shaw said: "We would like to thank everybody for coming. We were amazed at the turnout as there were far more people than we ever expected."

The event was opened by the head teacher of Edge Hill Junior School, Colin Brodie.

At the opening, Mr Brodie presented a cheque to the home on behalf of the pupils.

Helping out at the event with stalls and entertainment were Burton's 204 Round Table, Burton Rotary Club, Stapenhill Brownies, Stapenhill Junior Red Cross and the Edge Hill Junior School band.
