Police are investigating the second death at a prison near Uttoxeter in just seven months.

The latest death was reported at HMP Dovegate, just outside Marchington, yesterday morning, Monday, July 16.

It follows the case of 41-year-old inmate Kevin Lovatt, of Meir, whose death at the same jail in December is still being investigated.

Police are yet to formally identify the prisoner who died yesterday morning.

Speaking yesterday morning, a police spokesman said: "We have been alerted to the death of a man at HMP Dovegate at around 6.50am.

"At this time we do not believe the death to be suspicious. However, we are working with colleagues in the Prison Service to complete a full investigation."

An inquest will be opened and adjourned by South Staffordshire coroner Andrew Haigh at a later date.

Private firm Serco operates category B jail HMP Dovegate, which houses more than 1,000 male prisoners.

Their sentences range from four years to life.
