Those with a love of chocolate can now spend the day surrounded by the sweet treat as 200 extra staff are needed at a Derbyshire factory ahead of Christmas.

Chocolate-maker Thorntons revealed in July that it was looking to increase production for the festive season and launched a recruitment drive in July with Derby's JobCentre Plus.

The business was looking to create around 400 seasonal roles at its Somercotes factory, near Alfreton, and still has 200 positions left to fill.

Would you like to work at Thorntons?

It is understood that half of these positions have now been filled - but the company still needs more workers as it looks to churn out more products in time for one of its busiest sales periods.

Thorntons is looking for temporary factory operatives, who would earn between £7.80 and £8.90 an hour depending on which shift they work.

Other benefits include discounts on products sold at the firm's on-site staff shop.

In an online job advert, the firm said: "Here at our Alfreton plant we are entering our busiest and most exciting time of year – making sure all our lovely products are expertly made and packed in time for Christmas.

"Due to this demand we are looking for extra people to come and work for us on a temporary basis – we have a number of different shifts available for operatives within our manufacturing and packing factory."

According to the firm, both day and night shifts are available - including weekends.

Thorntons is not the only company looking to up its staffing levels in the run up to Christmas.

Heanor-based Christmas pudding-maker Matthew Walker is looking for around 100 new staff, according to JobCentre Plus.

And there are still a large number of roles to be filled in warehousing and logistics, not just in Derbyshire but across the region.

Jackie Thompson, employment partnership leader at Jobcentre Plus in Derby, said: "Many of these positions are available through agencies but people should not be deterred by this.

Thorntons has jobs on offer

"Applying for temporary roles is one of the best possible routes to getting a permanent, full-time position.

"It is a chance to show employers what you can do - and if you impress, you give yourself a great chance of landing a full-time role when a position comes available."
