A plane came off a taxiway and got struck on the gravel causing East Midlands Airport to temporarily close.

The airport had to divert flights as its emergency fire team was dispatched to help the cargo plane after it became stuck after hitting a stony area.

Airport bosses closed the runway last night, Wednesday, August 31, at around 9pm and inbound flights from Catalonia and Ibiza were forced to divert to Birmingham.

A spokesman for East Midlands Airport said no-one was injured in the incident. He said: "A DHL cargo plane was taxiing when it went off into some gravel at the side of the Tarmac.

"It got stuck, which meant it needed to be pulled out. No-one was injured as far as we know and there was no damage to the plane.

"The airport was temporarily closed inbound and outbound. It didn't block the runway but our fire crews helped assist with the removal of the aircraft. If the fire crews leave their station, then flights cannot land and take off - they need to be in place in case there is an emergency as a safety precaution."

The inbound flights from Catalonia and Ibiza did not land at Birmingham as East Midlands Airport had reopened by the time they arrived, so the planes were sent back to East Midlands.

An outbound flight to Dublin was also delayed by about 30 to 40 minutes due to the incident.
