Many of us want a job that is out of this world – well now this could actually become a reality as someone is needed to help protect threats to the planet.

NASA is searching for a new, high ranking employee and this is not a wind-up. Houston appears to really have a problem, and they currently do not have anyone on their team tasked with saving earth from any intergalactic threats.

The job title of "Planetary Protection Officer" sounds not entirely dissimilar to the roles of the Men In Black, although it seems unlikely that there will be any memory-erasing spray to help with day to day duties.

The main duty with the role is to help out with space missions, to ensure that harmful materials that could harm other planets are not taken in to space on missions, and that any harmful intergalactic materials are left in space.

The job description about fighting back against extra-terrestrial contamination is pretty vague - but the job comes with a "top secret" security clearance, so this is definitely juicier than it sounds.

Another responsibility is to avoid all ships coming in to contact with contamination that could risk chances of finding life elsewhere - which sounds, oddly enough, like a vague description of the Alien movies.

The pay is out of this world too, as NASA will be giving the lucky candidate between $124,406 (£93,876.77) and $187,000 (£141,110.20) per annum to do the job.

Those who apply must have a bachelor's degree, and preferably an advanced degree, in engineering, physical science or mathematics.

The qualifications do not end there, as those who apply will also need to have completed 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials or electronics.
