Burton's shamed MP is facing calls on a national level to quit after sending 2,000 x-rated sex texts to two of his constituents.

Tory Andrew Griffiths has stood down from his role as Small Business Minister as a result of the texts which were sent to barmaid Imogen Treharne and her friend, boasting of things like, "I can be an evil ******* when I'm turned on". Some of the messages depicted violent sex acts in crude detail while in others he was referring to himself as "daddy" and said that he had been 'running the country'.

Details of the texts were revealed in the Sunday Mirror, yesterday, July 15, and have provoked a storm locally and nationally. Mr Griffiths, who became a father for the first time in April, stepped down from his prime ministerial role on Friday head of the national newspaper article, but he still remains as the Burton MP.

Petitions have already been started online in Burton and Uttoxeter calling for him to quit his role as MP but today he was on the front page of the Daily Mirror which reports on the calls for him to stand down as Burton and Uttoxter's MP.

The article reported on many calls for the MP to go yesterday, including from Burton Labour Party, which says the MP needs to now consider whether he is fit to be the towns' MP.

Sue Arnold, Staffordshire's deputy police and crime commissioner, was among those condemning the actions of the 47-year-old Conservative MP.

Andrew Griffiths ahead of his win at the last general election

She said: "Andrew Griffiths pays women for X-rated images and videos and boasts he has beaten women. I'm ashamed that I've sat at a dinner table with such a despicable man who represents the women of East Staffordshire."

In a statement sent to the Burton Mail, Tory MP Mr Griffiths said he wanted to apologise to his constituents and that he now hoped to "restore their faith in me".

The married father-of-one, who daughter was born just three months ago, said he had sent the messages over two weeks during a "period of great personal pressure".

He said he had chosen to resign from his job as Small Business Minister because his behaviour fell way below the standards expected of him.

Imogen Treharne described the vile messages sent to her by Burton MP Andrew Griffiths

Mr Griffiths has represented the town since 2010, regaining his seat at last year's General Election with a healthy 10,000-plus majority.

His constituents have also taken to the Burton Mail Facebook page to make their voices heard over the actions of the man who is elected to represent them.

Kevin Friel said on the Burton Mail's Facebook page: "My personal view is Andrew has done a good job for the people of Burton and in many respects his actions are personal and the person he has betrayed is his wife. Which is very much a private matter. The trouble is I don't think he would keep his majority now so he really needs to consider what is best for his party."

Samantha Mcdonald Goddard said: "For someone who is very much in the public eye, he was playing a very dangerous game."

Lisa 'Nanaki' Head said: "He has no right to represent Burton any more and he should have consider it carefully before he took it too far."

The vile MP talked about getting rough

Christopher Marshall said: "Complete disgrace and embarrassment for the people of Burton and Uttoxeter. Really should leave his post with immediate effect I feel for his wife not good at all and the messages are just simply vile."

Lyn Tallet said "Mr Griffiths should do the decent thing and resign...if he was such a bloody good bloke ... what planet was he on when he was sex texting two other women..."

Wendy Dyche said: "He needs to take responsibility for his actions and quit as an MP. What a horrible example he is setting to all the young men and boys in the area that you can disrespect your wife, child and other women in a very demeaning way and get away with it."

Karen Keyte: "He needs to resign. He has proved beyond doubt he could never can be trusted."

Phoebe Wyatt said on Twitter: "Andrew Griffiths of course should be sacked! He works within constituencies and is taking advantage of his position! I don't even believe his apology! Too long. Too easy to write."

John Kennedy said: "We shouldn't be calling for Andrew Griffith's resignation. In any other occupation he would be sacked...end of!"

A 52-year-old parent of a young person with complex needs, both medical and educational, said she wished to show her support to the shamed MP.

She said: "He has worked tirelessly since 2013, sending letters and emails to various departments asking sometimes awkward questions on behalf of myself. He genuinely shows interest in supporting his constituent's child and ensuring that correct support etc has been achieved.

"I have no hesitance in supporting him positively given the support he has shown and do not want to discuss the recent matter in the press.

"I would therefore wish to send my sincere thank you for my local MP Andrew Griffiths for all the support he has given us over the last five years and I have no concerns that he will continue to support both myself and my son."

Nationally, people are taking to the Mirror's website, the Burton Mail's sister website, calling for him to resign his post.

DesertKitty said: "I need a shower after reading that.

"I hope his wife kicks him to the curb, he doesn't deserve a family."

Ian Slaney said: "People in public office should be held to a higher standard of responsibility. Breaching those standards, should result in punitive action.

"Sadly, it seems the country would be in perpetual turmoil if that was the case. These 'upstanding' citizens cause embarrassment to everyone, not just their family members.

"It's time to start making examples of them, not just allowing them to sneak off, back under the rock from which they came."

AalanK1000 said: "I don't think much for his marriage lasting, and that will cost him, plus zero chance of getting voted in again, and little chance of any other career. His local party should recall him."
