Two popular Ashby bars have seen their futures safeguarded following thousands of pounds of investment through a council grant - including providing a new weatherproof courtyard roof.

The Wine Bar and The Cocktail Bar, located in Rushtons Yard, Ashby, are both owned by Kate Zamani.

A new retractable roof is being built to cover the entire courtyard to enable both bars to continue serving and drinks flowing even during typically poor English weather.

This has been partially funded by a £6,000 grant from North-West Leicestershire District Council from a scheme aimed at sustaining business improvements in the town.

Kate Zamani, owner of both bars, said: "This grant will allow us to increase sales of food and drink, expand as a business and employ more staff.

"It's great for our customers too who have more space to enjoy and the cover of the retractable roof if the weather is bad.

"Without the support of the district council's grant and the business focus team this would not have been possible and we're very grateful.

"I think it's really important local businesses are supported in this way for the good of our town centres."

Councillor John Coxon, ward member for Ashby Castle at North West Leicestershire Council said: "I welcome the investment made by the Zamanis, supported by a significant grant contribution from the district council through the 'Enterprising Town Centres scheme.'

"The outdoor canopy is a fantastic addition to an independent business at the heart of Ashby town centre.

"It's very pleasing to see the evolution of a local business and the way in which this has received financial backing from the district council."

Portfolio holder for business at the district council, Councillor Tony Gillard added: "The Enterprising Town Centres scheme has now seen 15 businesses receive a combined total of over £80,000 from the district council.

"It is so important we encourage our town centres to grow and thrive, and I'm pleased the grants are helping to make this happen."

A £6,000 grant has been awarded to partially fund the project, through a North West Leicestershire District Council's "Enterprising Town Centres" grant.

The grant scheme was set up to encourage businesses to improve themselves and the character of the town.

Funding pots of between £500 and £25,000 are available for small businesses in Ashby, Measham, Castle Donington, Coalville, Ibstock and Kegworth.
