Owners at a quarry are calling for East Staffordshire people - including schoolchildren - to get involved in an educational competition which could see them net £30,000.

International quarrying company Hanson owns and runs Hanson Aggregates Barton Quarry, in Walton Lane, in the Staffordshire village and are endorsing the competition being ran by parent company, HeidelbergCement Group.

The Quarry Life Award will be run in 23 countries across the world; this year is the fourth times it's been run.

A brand new category has been introduced calling for community members to come together to create a project plan to help the East Staffordshire quarry become better connected within the area.

The group are calling for a range of people to get involved, from students and whole schools to individual community groups.

Martin Crow, senior sustainability manager for Hanson’s, oversees the Barton quarry, which specialises in sand and gravel.

Mr Crow said: “Our aim is to encourage projects which can support or enhance the work we are already doing at Barton to improve biodiversity and the quality of restoration.

“We also want to hear from people who have ideas which will create a better understanding of the importance of quarrying and its vital role in improving the built environment.”

Project proposals need to be finalised and submitted online by Monday, November 20 when a group of experts will be selecting six projects to put forward and be researched between January and September next year.

The final winner from quarries across the UK will be decided by a jury with a promise of a prize fund of £12,000. The winner will also be put forward to go into the international competition, pitching their idea against the other 22 countries to win a £30,000 prize.

Anyone with a unique idea who would like to get involved, can find more information or can submit their plan online at here.
