A storm that devastated a village in Cornwall could be heading to Burton to wreak more havoc this evening.

The village of Coverack was hit by flash floods yesterday, Tuesday July 18, with residents being evacuated from their homes. The storm hit the area shortly after 3.30pm before Cornwall Council declared it an emergency at 5.40pm.

The village has suffered severe damage following the thunderstorms

The four-foot wall of water ran through the village, leaving residents having to be rescued by a coastguard helicopter and taken to safety. Witness claim the hailstones were the size of 50p pieces, but no injuries have been reported.

More than 100,000 lightning strikes here recorded across the UK and 200 strikes were heard in one minute in Essex.

Experts have predicted that more than a month's worth of rain could fall in one day

Britain is still braced for more severe thunderstorms, with the Midlands and northern England next in the firing line.

The picture in Burton starts to look bad this evening with warm and humid weather until 5pm when the thunderstorm is expected to hit. It brings with it a risk of hail, strong winds and torrential downpours, and the Met Office's yellow weather warning for rain is still in place until 10pm tonight.

As we head into the evening the wet weather looks set to subside slightly before returning in the early hours of tomorrow morning, with lows of 12C.

Make sure to remember an umbrella tomorrow as showers will bring cooler and fresher conditions to the area in the morning. The rest of the day will stay largely dry with spots of sunshine and light winds. The maximum temperature for tomorrow is 20C.
