A Swadlincote construction facility for Burton and South Derbyshire College has been opened in partnership with property firm St Modwen - providing a permanent legacy to the career of former director Steve Burke.

The 38,000 sq ft Stephen Burke Construction Academy was launched earlier this month, in memory of former construction director Steve, who died of a heart attack last year at the age of 57.

The father-of-two, from Burton, worked on a number of projects during his career, including the Trentham Lakes housing and industrial development.

Mr Burke was a construction director for St Modwen and an ambassador for the construction industry.

Now, St Modwen Properties PLC and Burton and South Derbyshire College have established the Stephen Burke Construction Academy in William Nadin Way, Swadlincote.

The academy will be home to all construction courses run by the college for learners older than 16, including carpentry, joinery, plumbing, electrical and brickwork.

There are also art facilities on site, with training aiming to replicate that seen in working environments.

Dawn Ward, chief executive and principal of Burton and South Derbyshire College, said: "We are delighted to be renaming our construction academy after the late Stephen Burke, who was passionate about nurturing new talent in the construction industry.

"Burton and South Derbyshire College has got a rich heritage of working with employers to ensure our learners gain the skills that are in high demand by industry.

"Working in partnership with companies such as St Modwen is critical to ensure we are equipped to deliver the technical skills, knowledge and experience that employers are looking for, in line with the national skills strategy."

The college is continuing to liaise with St Modwen including working on possible work experience places and a "student of the year" scheme.

Dave Smith, managing director of St Modwen Homes, said: "Stephen had been with St Modwen for more than 20 years and was a valued friend and colleague.

"The opening of the Stephen Burke Construction Academy is testament to his commitment and enthusiasm for supporting and encouraging young people into rewarding careers in the construction industry."

At the launch event on Tuesday, July 3, a number of guests attended for a tour around the facility before taking part in a seminar to speak about ongoing challenges in the construction sector.
