Motorists will have to deal with a week of roadworks as a major road in Swadlincote will be closed every evening for the next week.
High Street, in Newhall, will be closed from 6.30pm until midnight on weekdays until Friday, August 25, while resurfacing work, totalling £82,000, is carried out by highways authority Derbyshire County Council. The road will be closed in High Street and Union Street between the junction at Darklands Road and the junction with Bretby Road.
Officers at the council say they have ensured that the closures will only take place in the evenings to avoid too much disruption. It has also been confirmed that the closures will not be in place this weekend.
Residents have been assured that the road will be reopened as soon as the works have been completed, which could be before the date given in the closure notice of Friday, August 25.
During the work, an alternative route has been suggested by the council which will see drivers diverted through Bretby Road and Wood Lane, turning right on to Burton Road, before heading on to Springfield Road and Newhall Road. This diversion is in place for drivers travelling in both directions.
Residents have been assured that access will be maintained, wherever possible, on the affected length of the road.
Anybody who lives around the affected area will still be able to use the road, when possible, but access has been limited to residents only.
Derbyshire County Council has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the roadworks.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire County Council said: "The resurfacing work we're carrying out on this road is part of a programme of highways improvements across the county.
"Resurfacing is carried out when the road has suffered extensive damage and requires extra work to make it safe and reliable for all road users.
"We'll be doing this work in the evenings during the week to minimise disruption to motorists and all affected roads will be fully open this weekend."
The closure should just have ended when drivers will then have to put up with a three-month closure of St Peter's Bridge across the border in Burton, which will be closed from Tuesday, August 29, while Staffordshire County Council carries out vital repairs on the bridge.
