A driver who ran out of fuel and caused delays for other motorists on the A38 in Derbyshire during rush-hour was slapped with a fine by police this morning.

The driver of the blue Vauxhall Vectra came to a stop in the secondhand lane causing other cars to have to slow down to get past. Police were called and when they arrived officers issued the motorist with a ticket for causing an unnecessary obstruction.

The incident happened near to the Coxbench turning near Derby at around 8.25am today, Thursday, September 14.

The driver was handed a ticket after causing delays on the carriageway

Delays began to build as the lane had to be closed while the car was moved, said a spokesman for Derbyshire Roads Policing unit. Traffic information website Inrix reported very slow traffic from about 8.25am.

Police later posted on Twitter saying: "Delays #A38 SB Coxbench due to this driver running out of fuel. Lane 2 closed and one ticket for causing unnecessary obstruction #Highways".

Highways England urges drivers to check their fuel levels before they set off and ensure they have enough in their tank for them to complete their journey.
