A drug-dealing robber has been put back behind bars after he escaped from prison through a gap in the fence.

Michael Ford, 24, went on the run for two-and-a-half months after fleeing from HMP Sudbury, near Uttoxeter, in May.

He had been locked up for eight years and 10 months in 2014 after carrying out a 10-week reign of terror.

But Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Ford fled the open prison because he was concerned about the "drug culture" there.

Now Ford has been jailed for a further four months after being discovered at a Northwood house, in Stoke-on-Trent, and pleading guilty to a charge of escape.

Prosecutor Douglas Lloyd said: "Ford was actively serving at the category D open prison when a man was spotted around the fence area acting suspiciously and the defendant was missing.

"It is an open prison with an eight-foot fence and the defendant has climbed that fence. The defendant was found on July 26 at an address in Northwood. He was arrested at the scene and explained he had no lawful reason to have left the prison.

"The defendant was serving a custodial sentence for a number of serious matters and was on the run for a significant amount of time."

Ford was jailed in December, 2014 after arming himself with a gas-powered BB gun at Hanley's Intu Potteries shopping centre, robbing a taxi driver in Blurton, breaking a 16-year-old boy's jaw at Central Forest Park and selling heroin to an undercover police officer.

The court heard Ford had been receiving support when he was serving time at nearby HMP Dovegate, in Marchington.

But he did not receive the same level of support at the open prison.

Anis Ali, mitigating, said: "He was transferred to a different prison and found himself embroiled in the drug culture there and was tempted by unhealthy substances. He escaped through a gap in the fence and it was opportunistic in nature."

Recorder Andrew Easteal branded Ford "stupid".

He said: "This was an extraordinary thing to do and an extraordinarily stupid thing to do. You are a capable young man who was making progress at HMP Dovegate and you must regain that progress."
